POSITION:                               Manager of Application Engineering


 

POSITION(s) Summaries

The position may assume responsibility for some or all of the following:
The Manager of Applications Engineering is a technical leader as well as an entrepreneur, who see opportunities rather than obstructions, and looks to exceed at goals.  This person strives toward a boundary-less flexible organization where everyone in the group feels responsible for the success or failure of the business as a whole.
 
The Application Engineering Manager provides technical leadership for the North American Group throughout all phases of APQP and, when necessary, co-ordinates activities with other sub segments.
 

JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES may include some or all of the following:


Concept:
  • Results driven, with the highest priority to short and long term EBIT & Economic Value Added.
  • Determines customers’ needs and desires and provides technical leadership in the application of innovative new products within the basic families developed by the Center of Expertise to address these needs. 
  • Promotes creativity and a sense of urgency within the group.
  • Maintains relations with the Senior Technical Management team of customers while staying abreast of the issues and problems they face which can develop into business opportunities.
  • Supports Program and Project Managers with technical presentations and product concept studies.  Monitors and reports on market, legislative and competitive trends that impact the division products. 
  • Assesses market competition by comparing the company’s product to the competitors’ products; Aggressively pursues any market knowledge available to us re competitive next steps and/or their  product descriptions
 Project Management:
  • Driven by the need for the business to be profitable and generate value.
  • Provides technical leadership throughout all phases of APQP on products at different stages of development including improvement in output and scrap to meet never ending productivity targets in production for the lifetime of the product.  Successful launch, on time, of profitable, and competitive products, that meet the business as well as the customers' expectations
  • Responsible for the application engineering function at all sites in NA
  • Establishes, manages and improves global engineering functional processes/standards.
  • Support the Global concept of common global Designs and Processes.
Generic:
 
  • Participates in the establishment of the strategic direction for the Engineering Team.
  • Creates information-sharing partnerships regarding best practices, with other groups.
  • Invests in strengthening and developing the technical and leadership capabilities of the Team (i.e. job placements/assignments; performance mgmt; succession planning, training, etc)
  • Achieves financial objectives of the department by preparing an annual budget, scheduling expenditures, analyzing variances and initiating corrective action.
  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops; reviewing professional publications; attending trade shows, establishing personal networks, and participating in professional societies.
  • Support or Coordinate Engineering activities between Germany, Mexico & the States.

 EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATIONAL BACKGROUND

  • University Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Proven experience in the design and automotive application of electromechanical devices.
  • Experience in leading a team preferred.
  • Ability to thrive in an entrepreneurial and competitive environment, while change and challenge of the 'status quo' is embraced.
  • Conceptual and strategic thinker able to work with Senior Management to explore and lead new initiatives.  Must be a “doer” who can build and implement plans which will help maintain group/company as a technical profitable leader in the industry;
  • Understand the business/marketing issues of the electric motor component industry.
