Job Description Job Title: Supplier Development Manager NAFTA Reports To: Director of Purchasing NAFTA Location: Metro Detroit Department(s): Purchasing FLSA Status: Exempt EEO1 Code: Officials and Managers (1) Summary Lead the development and maintain a supply base for Company’s NAFTA product groups that ensures compliance of automotive standards and requirements. Provides technical leadership for the continuous improvement of supplier quality. Participates in the selection of suppliers for new or current business with the appropriate Commodity Buyer(s) through the evaluation of supplier quality history from the supplier quality function. Characteristic Values Key figures which characterize the job (quantities, budget, financial values) and risk of damage (value). Estimated supplier turnover visited each year could reach $25 to $40 million. The additional value of this position is to have smooth component launches without a financial drain neither on Company (resources and budget dollars) nor on the supplier for continued profitability. Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. (Other duties may be assigned.) Responsible for adherence to corporate procedures. Support Supplier Development Specialists with rapid “check” audit to determine if official Supplier Technical Audit is warranted (Commodity Buyer is lead on Tech Audit). Also conducts audits as necessary given workload requirements. Analyzes, evaluates, and presents supplier information concerning factors such as business situations, production capabilities, manufacturing problems, economic trends, and design and development of new products for consideration by other members of management. Enforce all valid procedures, work instructions, and organizational instructions for Supplier Development Specialists. Prepares additional instructions regarding supplier development procedures as needed and conducts training with NAFTA supplier development team. Acts as a liaison between purchasing and the supplier verifying that all required drawings, specifications, and component testing properly meet the technical and quality capabilities that are necessary. Approximately 50-60% travel should be expected. Support Supplier Development Specialist with audit follow-up activities to monitor and ensure corrective actions take place at applicable suppliers. Also conducts audit follow-up activities as necessary given workload requirements. Assist suppliers, especially minority-owned, in developing quality and operating systems leading to cost reductions and process improvements. Work with Supplier Quality Department to help maintain a uniform supplier performance rating system for quality, delivery, cost, responsiveness, and technological knowledge. Adheres to Company Quality Policy. Adheres to all Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) regulations and implements all necessary measures for work, health, and environmental protection within the range of responsibility. Enforce above health and safety practices with NAFTA supplier development team. Supervisory Responsibilities Directly manages 3-6 employees in the NAFTA Purchasing Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees with detailed training plans; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraisal performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Mentor Supplier Development Specialists in key job roles and responsibilities. Includes traveling to regional locations and supporting assignments in order to build knowledge and disciplined approach to supplier development. Leadership – Mentor and lead the supplier development process for the NAFTA region by utilizing Company corporate standards and disciplined approach to meet technical and financial requirements. Education and/or Experience Bachelor's degree in Business or Mechanical Engineering from four-year college or university in business or engineering; minimum of 6 years in the supplier development or supplier quality function required. Stamping and tooling knowledge is required. Plastic injection molding knowledge is a plus. Advanced degree and/or prior supervisor experience is preferred. Language Skills Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. Ability to speak German and/or Spanish would be advantageous/helpful but this is not a requirement. Mathematical Skills Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry. Reasoning Ability Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables. Computer Skills To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of Microsoft Office software package (Outlook, Excel, Word, Power Point). Certificates, Licenses, Registrations Certified Quality Engineer (CQE) is not required but a plus. Other Skills and Abilities Must have excellent communication skills (oral and written).
